It's early days for the renewables industry, and by and large academic institutions have yet to fully respond to the increasing demand for skills that will be created by the future growth in the industry.

However, if you are keen to pursue further qualifications in this field you could do worse than look into the following courses (no prizes for guessing that most are based in the South-West or Scotland!)

Courses

B.Sc/M.Sci in Renewable Energy, Dundee University

This is a 3, 4 or 5-year science/engineeering-based course offering modules in renewable technology. The website claims "Dundee University is ideally placed to make a contribution to training in this strategic area with its breadth of research expertise that covers the spectrum from solar energy, wind, geothermal and biomass technologies to power management, law and marketing and associated disciplines. There is already a Sun City initiative and a history of research in photovoltaics that highlights Dundee as a centre for solar energy activity."

B.Sc Renewable Energy, Exeter University

This is a three year undergraduate course, with the added bonuses of field trips to Iceland and Greece and a vacation placement. The course claims to be backed by a number of large renewables companies and organisations, and according to the website "is a practical, vocational programme for individuals seeking a professional role in this rapidly expanding and strategically important energy sector."

M.Sc/PGD in Renewable Energy Technology and Sustainability, Reading University

This course, which lasts 12 months for the M.Sc and 9 months for the diploma, is based in the School of Construction Management and Engineering.

The course aims to "bring students up to date with energy technologies and policy together with their social and environmental impacts, including climate change. There is a focus on renewable energy particularly wind, hydro, solar and biomass... The programme attracts a mix of people from a variety of related backgrounds, including physical scientists, engineers, policy makers and economists, environmental scientists, and professionals with working knowledge in the field."

M.Sc Renewable Energy and the Built Environment, Centre for Alternative Technology, Powys

CAT runs a number of long and short courses in environmental topics.

This particular course, which concentrates on a wide range of current environmental and renewable energy issues, is run by the Centre for Alternative Technology in the Graduate School of the Environment and validated for full MSc status by the University of East London, (UEL) with students being registered at UEL for the duration of their studies.

FdSc Renewable Energy Technology, Cornwall College

This is a 2-year full time course with options for studying individual modules or part-time over a longer period. Entry requirements are 1 A level, BTEC National Diploma or equivalent.

It's a wide-ranging course covering most aspects of renewable energy. If you complete the course successfully you will have the option of continuing into the final year of a full BSc Hons Degree in Renewable Energy at the Combined University of Cornwall in nearby Penryn.

Institutions involved in running courses relating to renewable energy can publicise details of their courses on this page free of charge. Please contact us to make arrangements.
